Each month of Image’s 25th year will boast a theme for special anniversary variants, beginning with Wednesday, February 1st—the exact date of Image Comics’ founding in 1992, and the date of this year’s “Image Comics Day.”

“One of the great things about celebrating our 25th anniversary is that it creates an opportunity for us to look back at over two decades of history-making comics and showcase some of the wonderful work that made Image what it is today,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “Everyone in the Image family is a fan at heart, and this month’s tribute variants give the participating creators a chance to show their admiration for some of comics’ greatest creator-owned triumphs by putting their own unique spin on classic images from that rich and varied past for a collection of covers as fun as they are stunning.”

[New Comics] All Star Batman #2 (@DCComics)

The first story in All-Star Batman #2 continues Batman’s race to “that house,” where he believes a cure for Harvey Dent exists. With art by John Romita Jr., Danny Miki, and Dean White, Batman takes a beating from a number of second- and third-tier villains, all trying to rescue Two-Face and become the next crime king of Gotham City as their reward. The Two-Face/Harvey Dent and Batman relationship has been explored many times in the past, but this is the first time that Snyder has focused on Dent. With his previous stories, Snyder has focused on what made the villainy of the Court of Owls, the Joker, the Riddler or Mister Bloom twisted reflections of Gotham City. Unlike those villains who fought Batman for the heart and soul of the city, Two-Face fights for his own survival, using villains, civilians and even Batman’s allies against him as his weapons. Two-Face is fighting for his life, and he’s more than willing to play dirty by showing the two-faced nature of everyone else.

One of the more satisfying aspects of All-Star Batman #2 is that it’s worth the $4.99 price tag. There’s a lot to unpack in this issue, and it feels like a lot of bang for the buck. We do feel like the constant betrayals of Batman may be Synder’s way of making this issue’s primary story seem more important than it actually is. We’re not fans of the old bait and switch, and frankly, we’re starting to think that’s where Synder is going with it. That does temper our impression of the book. But overall, it’s been very enjoyable experience so far.

[New Comics] Kill Or Be Killed #1 (@ImageComics)

[New Comics] Kill Or Be Killed #1

Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Sean Phillips and Elizabeth Breitweiser
Publisher: Image Comics

Kill Or Be Killed (aka Karate Killers) was a 1976 South African martial arts film about a fighting tournament organized by two surviving officers of the Axis powers. While not exactly a great success, it did spawn a sequel called Kill And Kill Again, in which the protagonist, Steve Hunt (James Ryan) assembled a team of special operatives, including a man named Hot Dog, to take down a cult led by the guy who played Little Ricky on I Love Lucy.

Sadly, this comic book is not an adaptation of that film.

Instead, it’s the latest project from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, a team that has produced such a consistent level of high quality crime comics in the 17 years that they’ve been working together the past few with colorist Elizabeth Breitweiser that when they do something new, I can spend an entire paragraph talking about an obscure karate movie and still be pretty confident that everyone’s as excited about the new comic as I am. This time, their focus is on a young vigilante struggling to keep his secret as he takes out “bad people” and “slowly ruins his life.” With a premise like that, this might end up being the Brubaker/Phillips/Breitweiser-est comic of all time, even if they don’t get around to having Hot Dog show up

“The Flash” Debuts Second Photo of Wally West’s Kid Flash Suit

KidFlash-f688e

During the final episodes of “The Flash’s” second season, Wally and Jesse Wells were both affected by a second particle accelerator explosion after Harrison Wells attempted to get Barry’s speed back. Both were knocked out by the force of the explosion, but neither showed any speedster abilities before the season ended. However, it seems that will change when the show returns this fall.

The major DC Comics event from 2011 of the same name saw Barry Allen trying to navigate a totally altered world — one wherein his mother Nora was alive. As such, it’s unclear if Lonsdale’s Kid Flash will be a fixture of the world as Barry Allen knows it, or a byproduct of this alternate timeline. Kid Flash will definitely appear in Season 3’s debut episode, but it’s another question entirely if he’ll continue to play the speedster for the rest of the season.

Starring Grant Gustin, Jesse L. Martin, Carlos Valdes and more, “The Flash” returns to The CW on October 4 at 8 pm EST.
