[New Comics] Kill Or Be Killed #1 (@ImageComics)

[New Comics] Kill Or Be Killed #1

Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Sean Phillips and Elizabeth Breitweiser
Publisher: Image Comics

Kill Or Be Killed (aka Karate Killers) was a 1976 South African martial arts film about a fighting tournament organized by two surviving officers of the Axis powers. While not exactly a great success, it did spawn a sequel called Kill And Kill Again, in which the protagonist, Steve Hunt (James Ryan) assembled a team of special operatives, including a man named Hot Dog, to take down a cult led by the guy who played Little Ricky on I Love Lucy.

Sadly, this comic book is not an adaptation of that film.

Instead, it’s the latest project from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, a team that has produced such a consistent level of high quality crime comics in the 17 years that they’ve been working together the past few with colorist Elizabeth Breitweiser that when they do something new, I can spend an entire paragraph talking about an obscure karate movie and still be pretty confident that everyone’s as excited about the new comic as I am. This time, their focus is on a young vigilante struggling to keep his secret as he takes out “bad people” and “slowly ruins his life.” With a premise like that, this might end up being the Brubaker/Phillips/Breitweiser-est comic of all time, even if they don’t get around to having Hot Dog show up

Star Trek: Discovery Officially Takes Place in the Prime Universe

Star Trek Discovery

And the name of the newest Star Trek television series is… Star Trek: Discovery, with the show’s main ship called the U.S.S. Discovery (NCC-1031). Executive Producer Bryan Fuller revealed the details and debuted the logo today during a standing-room-only “Star Trek 50th Anniversary” panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con.
Fuller — who in the early morning served fans in line donuts and coffee — treated Hall H attendees to an exclusive first look video of the test flight of the U.S.S. Discovery, the newest Starfleet ship in the storied franchise’s return to television.
“It’s an incredible honor to have shared the stage with these representatives of all the Star Trek series that have ever been,” Bryan Fuller told StarTrek.com. “And it’s also an honor to have them be the launching pad for for a new series that has something we all relate to in Star Trek mythology, which is discovery.”

Fuller smiled when asked how and why the upcoming show — and its central ship — will be called Discovery. “There are so many reasons why we settled on Discovery,” Fuller explained. “But the chief one amongst them was that I couldn’t think of a more Star Trek-themed name for a ship than Discovery.”

Star Trek: Discovery is coming to CBS All Access in January 2017, following the premiere on the CBS Television Network, and will be distributed concurrently on Netflix in 188 countries and through Bell Media in Canada.

Original Nintendo System Returning With Pre-Loaded Games

Nintendo resurrects the NES with new Nintendo Classic Mini

Nintendo resurrects the NES with new Nintendo Classic Mini

The Nintendo Classic Mini, as it’s known, looks just like a shrunken NES. But instead of using those fiddly cartridges, it comes with 30 games built in. Hook it up to your TV with an HDMI cable and enjoy the glory days of Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donky Kong and a whole load more besides.

It comes with one Mini NES controller, but you can buy a second one to play with your friends. You can also hook up a Wii controller instead.

It’s due to go on sale on 11 November in the UK and US, with US pricing pegged at $60. I’ve asked Nintendo to confirm UK pricing and Australian availability, but in the meantime, that US price converts to £45 or AU$80.

“The Flash” Debuts Second Photo of Wally West’s Kid Flash Suit

KidFlash-f688e

During the final episodes of “The Flash’s” second season, Wally and Jesse Wells were both affected by a second particle accelerator explosion after Harrison Wells attempted to get Barry’s speed back. Both were knocked out by the force of the explosion, but neither showed any speedster abilities before the season ended. However, it seems that will change when the show returns this fall.

The major DC Comics event from 2011 of the same name saw Barry Allen trying to navigate a totally altered world — one wherein his mother Nora was alive. As such, it’s unclear if Lonsdale’s Kid Flash will be a fixture of the world as Barry Allen knows it, or a byproduct of this alternate timeline. Kid Flash will definitely appear in Season 3’s debut episode, but it’s another question entirely if he’ll continue to play the speedster for the rest of the season.

Starring Grant Gustin, Jesse L. Martin, Carlos Valdes and more, “The Flash” returns to The CW on October 4 at 8 pm EST.

San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan retires after 19 seasons

Tim Duncan of San Antonio Spurs announces retirement

San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan retires after 19 seasons

After five NBA titles, two NBA MVP awards, 15 All-Star appearances and a spot on many lists as the greatest power forward of all time, San Antonio Spurs star Tim Duncan is calling it a career.

After 19 seasons and five rings with the Spurs, Tim Duncan is calling it a career. Marc Stein looks back at the Big Fundamental’s bond with his only NBA coach, Gregg Popovich.
Duncan, who turned 40 in April, announced Monday that he is retiring from the NBA after 19 seasons, all with San Antonio.

The 40-year-old made 15 All-Star appearances, 15 All-NBA teams (including 10 appearances on the First Team) and 15 All-Defensive Teams (eight First Team) in his illustrious career; the All-NBA and All-Defensive berths are the most in league history. He retires in the top 10 in NBA history in regular-season games and minutes played, offensive, defensive and total rebounds, and blocked shots, and 14th on the all-time scoring list with 26,496 points. He is the Spurs’ record book, topping San Antonio’s franchise history in virtually every significant category.

He, along with Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, created a dynasty in San Antonio, making it a fearful team for years in the NBA. The trio has the NBA record for most wins by three players in both the regular season (575) and postseason (126). Led by coach Gregg Popovich, Duncan also has the most wins for a player-coach duo in NBA history (1,001).

He’ll be remembered mostly for his playoff dominance, as he’s the only player to log 9,000 career minutes in the postseason.

[Marvel] The Unworthy Thor Comic Book Series

The Original God of Thunder Is Back and Ready to Prove Himself in The Unworthy Thor

[Marvel] The Unworthy Thor Comic Book Series

Coming this Fall, The Unworthy Thor, by Mighty Thor writer Jason Aaron and artist Olivier Coipel, will follow the god’s escape and captivity—revealed to be at the hands of none other than cosmic archiver the Collector—and his journey to becoming a hero once more. But he’s not taking Jane’s place: Unworthy Thor is expressly a companion series to Mighty Thor. The Odinson is forging his own path, and will even wield his own hammer… one that actually has some pretty huge connections to the Pre-Secret Wars Marvel universe.

We sat down with Jason Aaron to discuss why now is the right time to give Thor Odinson his own series, what his re-appearance means for the Marvel universe, and just how the hell he’ll figure out referring to double the Thors in his work on Unworthy and Mighty Thor. (io9)
